Mobile Exchange Setup - Blackberry

Depending which mobile phone provider you have please ensure you have blackberry services enabled. This costs around £5 per month and is part of your monthly contract.

Blackberry Enterprise or Mobile Provider?

Blackberry devices can be configured either via Blackberry Enterprise Express which is loaded onto a server along side Exchange server or utilising the mobile phone provider services.

The main choice between the two services is whether you require your contacts, calendar and tasks sycronsied. If so then Blackberry Enterprise is required. Otherwise the mobile phone provider is adaquate for most users.

If you have Blackberry Enterprise then the easiest setup is configured when you connect your Blackberry to the server via USB. Please contact our helpdesk for more information.

To accessing your mobile providers blackberry login select them from the UK carriers listed below:

You will initially need to create an account on the site, which will require the blackberry phone as both the IMEI number and PIN are required. These can be both found via the options and status screen on your blackberry.

(Occasionally you can be restricted to setup directly on your phones interface, we have found this extremely limiting and generally only works with pop3/imap accounts, contact your mobile phone provider if this occurs for assistance in setting up a blackberry account.)

Before setting up the email connection ensure you have the following:

  • Outlook web access server i.e. HTTPS://OWA.MYDOMAIN.CO.UK/Exchange or HTTPS://REMOTE.MYDOMAIN.CO.UK/OWA (check the correct spelling)
  • Username & Password - these are normally your login name and password for your pc/laptop. To verifiy access the OWA link first.
  • Mailbox name - this will generally be the same as your login name but will probably match the first part of your email address.

To integrate a Microsoft Outlook Web Access email address using the Email Setup application from the BlackBerry smartphone, complete the following steps:

  1. Open Email Settings on the BlackBerry smartphone. For BlackBerry 6 and BlackBerry 7 powered smartphones open Setup and choose Email Accounts.
  2. Click Set up another email account.
  3. Choose Other from the list of options.
  4. Enter the Email Address and Email Password, then click Continue.
  5. If the BlackBerry Internet Service indicates that there was a problem, select I will provide the settings.
  6. Select Outlook Web Access (Exchange).
  7. Enter the Outlook Web Access URL, User name and Mailbox name, then press Continue.

Note: To determine the mailbox name for different versions of Microsoft Outlook Web Access using the following steps:

Outlook Web Access 2003: Log in to the Microsoft Outlook Web Access account and pause on the Inbox folder on the left top corner. On the status bar, the mailbox name should be displayed in the following format.

    https://<domain.name.com>/exchange/<mailbox name>/

Outlook Web Access 2007 and 2010: The Mailbox name is not required, please enter something simple like first name. Ensure there are no special characters or spaces.
Note: If the Mailbox Name field is missing from the advanced setup screen and the Email account is using Outlook Web Access 2003 the Mailbox Name can be added at the end of the URL as seen below:

    http://<domain.name.com>/exchange/<mailbox.name>

To integrate a Microsoft Outlook Web Access email address using the web login for BlackBerry Internet Service, complete the following steps:

  1. Go to the wireless service provider's BlackBerry Internet Service website and log in to the BlackBerry Internet Service account by navigating to the following URL: https://<carrier>.blackberry.com
Note: <carrier> corresponds to each individual wireless carrier e.g (Verizon, Rogers, T-Mobile, Sprint etc...)
  2. Click Set Up Email.
  3. Complete the Email Address and Email Password, and select Next.
  4. Select Provide Additional Settings.
  5. Select Microsoft Exchange (using Microsoft® Outlook Web Access), complete the required fields, and select Next.

For Outlook Web Access 2007 and 2010: The Mailbox name is not required. Enter something simple like first name and ensure there are no special characters or spaces.

Tips..

If you change your password on the server or if the internet is out for a short while you will receive a message from the blackberry services informing you that they cannot reconnect your email account. You will need to login again to the blackberry portal and re-enter the password. if this still fails and the urls have not changes then remove the account completely and recreate. (you cannot create two of the same email address on the portal so deleting the account is the only way.)

Connectivity - if you're not receiving emails then firstly check if your phone has the blackberry pips logo on the top line of the screen, ie next to 3g connection strength.
